The Mercantile Social Review

1579 Hollis St, Halifax, NS

2/5 Not Recommended

The server Guesepth(?!) at 2000hr on Sept 24th 2020 was inhospitable and ungracious towards us. He practically ignored us, didn’t clean our tables from drink condensation, replace our used napkins when we visited the washrooms, and didn’t ask us if we enjoyed our meals or wanted another beverage. His attitude was palpable and not imagined. “Aversive racism” is the term (please look it up). We’ve been to hundreds of mid to high-end restaurants and know what service is like from 1-10. So we would give him a 3/10 for just bringing the food and drinks out.

We did not feel like he cared about us as guests of the establishment. If people are going to be spending $37 on subpar halibut we should at least feel good about it. We did not enjoy the food. We did however, enjoy the drinks and the surroundings. The server ruined the rest of it for us.

A young manager named Charlotte didn’t help make us feel any better and compared the places we had already been to and had good service, with her own “horrible” experiences at those same establishments. Then she insulted us be offering to give us the meal free after we told her that the server needed re-education.

We did not go to the Mercantile for a free meal. We went for an experience. If the server and manager do not know what people go to restaurants for they should be fired. They ruined our experience. It was my friends birthday in a few days and thank God we didn’t go there on her actual birthday.
