Independent Critic: Nightlife, Food & Travel

Toronto • Canada • International

I’ve traded clinical charts for dinner menus, but my eye for detail hasn't changed. If I can handle a neuro-trauma unit at 3:00 AM, I can certainly handle a lukewarm risotto in King West. Most reviews feel like they were written by someone afraid to hurt a chef’s feelings; I don't have that problem. I’ve spent twenty-seven years in trauma and intensive care units, so I notice the small things that make or break an experience. You won't find descriptions of how a sauce 'dances' on the tongue here. I’m looking for the standard of truth in a city that’s obsessed with the newest and most expensive thing.

BodyStats Toronto: Dexa Scan and Vo2 Max Testing

Western Battery Rd, Toronto

Visited April 6th 2026. BodyStats made getting a DEXA scan easy quick and stress-free. We went in today for a scan with Paul the owner and the whole appointment took about 15 minutes. The place was clean organized and had a friendly welcoming vibe from the moment we walked in. It's also reasonably priced which makes it even better.

Soluna Toronto

Queen St W, Toronto

We went to Soluna on Sat April 4th, 2026. This place was formerly the well-loved Ultra, and before that Bamboo, so I've been occasionally partying at this location for quite some time. Soluna is a welcomed reincarnation. This place really shines as a party venue. The decor is beautiful and feels worthy of a higher-end nightclub. Nothing about it feels cheap, cheesy, or thrown together.

The Dixon Kitchen & Bar

Caroga Dr, Mississauga

Went to The Dixon at the Hilton Hotel on March 26th 2026 for dinner with a family member making a stopover by Pearson International airport. In a nutshell there were only two dinner menu items on the table at The Dixon I'd happily eat again. The creamy seafood ravioli dish was one of them. Rich, tasty, and comforting without turning into a gluey mess. The other standout was the braised beef dish with mashed potatoes and vegetables.

Moon's Flowers

Dalhousie St, Toronto

I ordered the Valentine's Day 2026 Half Dozen Red Roses (with baby's breath) and let's just say... I was a little surprised by what arrived. For $78 plus HST, plus $25 delivery (hello $116.39 CAD 👀) no vase needed, I was expecting lush, bulbous, high-petal-count garden style roses. What arrived? Standard hybrid teas 🌹. Basic commercial roses you can find almost anywhere.
